After nearly a 50-year absence, the Toyota Crown name is returning to the United States. As Toyota’s longest-running nameplate, the Crown has been in production since 1955 and was sold in the U.S. between 1958 and 1974. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Crown is returning in an all-new form.
While Toyota classifies the Crown as a full-size sedan, it has a taller height that gives it a spacious interior and sportier handling.
The 2023 Toyota Crown will be available in three grades: XLE, Limited, and Platinum. It will be arriving at Courvelle Toyota late this year.
Powertrains and performance
The Toyota Crown will only be available as a hybrid vehicle. However, there are two hybrid powertrains to choose from.
- HYBRID MAX: The HYBRID MAX includes a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This has a combined output of a Toyota-estimated 340 horsepower. This powertrain is exclusive to the Platinum grade.
- Toyota Hybrid System: The fourth generation of the THS uses a high-output bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery. This is paired with an efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This combination offers a Toyota-estimated 38 mpg combined.
The THS comes with driver-selectable modes including NORMAL, ECO, and SPORT. This gives you the freedom to adjust the Crown’s performance to match your preferred driving style.
Every Crown comes standard with Electric On-Demand All-Wheel Drive. This system uses a separate rear electric motor to send power to the rear wheels, as needed.
Connectivity and safety
All Crown grades come standard with a premium 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen issue. This includes wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ along with cloud-based navigation and over-the-air updates. There is also an advanced Toyota AI assistant that can help you stay connected and in control. It responds to simple wakeup phrases like “OK Toyota” and “Hey Toyota.”
For those who prefer an immersive listening experience, the Limited and Platinum grades are equipped with an 11-speaker JBL® sound system. This system was specifically designed for the Toyota Crown to match its unique characteristics.
If you want to take the stress out of parking, the Platinum grade comes with the Advanced Park System. The sensors can automatically identify an appropriate parking space and then control the steering, acceleration, and braking for hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking.
The Toyota Crown will turn heads with its modern, sophisticated design. It has an overall height of 60.6 inches and is 194 inches long. These impressive dimensions are paired with large-diameter wheels. The Platinum model rides on standard 21-inch machined 10-spoke alloy wheels with black accents. The XLE and Limited grades come with 19-inch multi-spoke two-tone alloy wheels. The Limited trim is available with 21-inch 10-spoke dark metallic wheels.
Interior comfort and materials
The Toyota Crown is a premium vehicle that offers an upscale interior. No matter which grade you choose, all models come standard with 8-way power adjustable, heated front seats. The rear seats are well-cushioned and bolstered to deliver ample comfort and support. With the Limited and Platinum trims, the front seats come with ventilation, while heat is added to the rear seats.
On the XLE trim, you get SofTex combined with black woven fabric. The Limited and Platinum come standard with leather upholstery. All trims come standard with dual zone climate control and a 12.3-inch color MID. On this screen you can switch between various display options including the Hybrid System Indicator.
Toyota engineers and designers worked hard to create a calm atmosphere with advanced sound blocking techniques. Whether you want to enjoy a good conversation or listen to your music without road noise, the Crown will feel like a serene home away from home. And if you enjoy a fresh-air driving experience, the Platinum and Limited trims come standard with a panoramic moonroof.
