Toyota has officially manufactured the 50-millionth Corolla, a historic milestone not shared by any other nameplate. Introduced in 1966 and now in its 12th generation, the Toyota Corolla surpassed the Volkswagen Beetle as the bestselling car in the world in the 1990s and has held onto the title ever since.
The Corolla first became available in the United States in 1968 and, in the following decade, quickly rose in popularity as the 1973 oil embargo motivated consumers to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles. Today, the 12th-generation Corolla is one of the most efficient compact cars you can buy, with the non-hybrid and hybrid models earning an EPA-estimated 40 and 52 mpg on the highway, respectively.
Almost all modern Toyota Corolla models sold in the U.S. are assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi, which opened in 2011. The plant builds about 170,000 vehicles per year and employs 1,900 people. More than a million Toyota Corollas have rolled off its assembly line over the past decade.
Despite its many years of success, the Corolla is not about to rest on its laurels. New models are available with a distinguished Nightshade Special Edition model and a limited-run Apex Edition that takes performance to a higher level. For 2022, Toyota is also launching the first-ever Corolla Cross, a practical new crossover based on the same world-beating vehicle architecture as the regular Corolla.
